Katy Perry
Controversy
Katy Perry is a pop music singing
sensation that is known for her controversial music. Katy Perry raised concern
after her song “I Kissed a Girl” was released because it was radical to talk
about bisexuality (Hollie, 2014) . Katy Perry is an icon to
people of all ages who listen to pop music, and her fans listen to her music
and take into consideration to what she says.
The song “Dark Horse,” Katy Perry
released in 2013 has continued to raise controversy amongst her fans. This song
raised controversy because in a part of the music video there was a pendant
being worn by a man that said “Allah” which is the Arabic meaning of God (Hollie, 2014) .
This man is burned in the music video along with the pendant. A Muslim
viewer did not agree with this part of the video and started a petition that
had over 60,000 signatures trying to get the music video removed from YouTube.
Instead of the music video being removed, Katy Perry responded by taking the
pendant out of the video (Hollie, 2014) .
Popular icons have to be aware of
the messages they are sending out through what they say, wear, perform, sing,
etc. The better the icon is about listening to their fans, the more of a leader
this icon will become.
This type of performer gives me
insight because she performs about whatever she wants, but is very conscious of
peoples concerns when it comes to religious. Although Katy Perry does not
specify a religion, she told Marie Claire magazine that she is very close to
God, and never meant to offend anyone’s religious beliefs. I believe Katy Perry
handles her fans and situations she gets herself into very well, and is a great
idol for the music culture (Hollie, 2014) .
